Say it with an arrow.

JotShot is a small Mac app that waits in your menu bar. Press ⌘⌃4, grab any part of the screen, point at the thing with arrows, text and stamps — and share it before anyone has to ask what you meant.

How it works

Three steps. About ten seconds.

If you miss Skitch, you already know how this works. Evernote stopped updating it in 2016 — JotShot picks up where it left off, built from scratch for today’s macOS.

  1. 1

    Press ⌘⌃4

Drag over the part of the screen you mean, click a window, or grab the whole screen. JotShot waits in your menu bar and opens the shot instantly.

  2. 2

    Point at the thing

An arrow, a box, a word or two. Every tool has a single-key shortcut, so your hands never leave the keyboard.

  3. 3

    Send it anywhere

Copy it, drag it straight into Slack or Mail, save it with one click, or hand it to the macOS share sheet. Done.

Features

Everything you need. Nothing you have to learn.

The whole app fits in your head after one screenshot. That’s the point.

Area, window or full screen

Grab any region with a crosshair, pick a whole window with one click, or take the entire screen. Need a menu open first? Hold ⇧ and JotShot waits 3, 5 or 10 seconds.

Nine tools, nine keys

Arrow, line, rectangle, ellipse, pen, highlighter, text, stamp and blur. Each on its own letter — and your last colour, stroke and size stick.

Stamps that say it for you

Numbered steps that count up by themselves, plus approved, rejected, attention, question and perfect. Drop one in and everybody gets the message at a glance.

Hide what shouldn’t travel

Blur or pixelate names, e-mail addresses, keys or faces before a screenshot leaves your Mac.

Crop by pulling the edge

Drag any edge or corner inward to crop. Changed your mind? Pull it back out — the pixels are still there. Keep pulling for white space to write on.

Share your way

Copy with one click, drag the image out of the window, save straight to your folder as PNG, JPEG or PDF — no dialog — or use the share sheet.

  • Capture history — on or off, your choice
  • Blank canvas: just start drawing
  • Copy & paste annotations between shots
  • Undo & redo
  • Move, resize & recolor anything
  • Zoom to fit, 100 %, 200 %
  • Custom global shortcut
  • Open, paste or drop any image
  • PNG · JPEG · TIFF · HEIC · WebP
  • Lives in the menu bar and the Dock

Tools

Nine tools. One key each.

Tap a letter, draw, move on. Blur has a pixelate mode, stamps come in three sizes, and your colour, stroke and text size follow you from shot to shot.

Privacy

Nothing leaves your Mac.

JotShot doesn’t have a server, an account or a tracker. Your screenshots stay on your disk until you decide where they go.

  • No network access. The app never connects to the internet — not for analytics, not for updates, not for anything.
  • No account, no sign-in. Buy it once in the App Store and it just works.
  • Sandboxed. JotShot only touches the files you open, paste or save — and asks macOS before capturing the screen.

FAQ

Good questions.

Is JotShot a Skitch replacement?

That’s the idea. Skitch made screenshot annotation effortless, then Evernote stopped updating it in 2016 — it still needs Rosetta on Apple Silicon Macs. JotShot brings the same flow — capture, arrow, share — back to modern macOS, written from scratch in Swift, with the same keyboard-first feel.

Which Macs does it run on?

Any Mac running macOS 14 Sonoma or later — including macOS 27 Golden Gate. Apple Silicon or Intel.

Why does it ask for Screen Recording permission?

macOS requires it for any app that captures the screen. JotShot only captures when you press the shortcut or choose a capture command — never in the background, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Can I change the capture shortcut?

Yes. ⌘⌃4 is the default; pick anything you like in Settings.

Which file formats are supported?

Open or paste PNG, JPEG, TIFF, HEIC and WebP images — or anything else macOS can display. Export as PNG, JPEG or PDF, or just copy the result to the clipboard.

How do I crop?

Drag any edge or corner of the picture inward. It’s non-destructive: pull the edge back out and the hidden pixels return. Pull past the original edge and you get white space for notes.

Is there really no subscription?

Really. $0.99 on the Mac App Store, once, and the app is yours. No in-app purchases, no account, no trial timer.

Is there a Windows or iPhone version?

No — JotShot is a Mac app, built with native macOS frameworks.

Ready when you are.

Install it, press ⌘⌃4, and never explain a screenshot in three paragraphs again.
